Don’t wait to see the world - start right now
The Adventure
Flying from Johannesburg, SA to Kigali, Rwanda, I was crammed into a tiny window seat next to a man with a giant carryon bag. During the flight we were served a meal in a metal container like a big sardine tin. You rolled back the foil top to reveal the most delicious curry with meat of a mysterious origin. Kudu? Beef? Other? It was amazing and I ate every bite. We landed multiple times like riding a flying bus. My friend with the giant, heavy carryon departed somewhere in Zambia and I flew on.
Each city looked like we were landing in Los Angeles or Atlanta - the cities were huge! My only regret was we were flying, not driving. Exploring each place became a bucket list item. An experience I can scratch off of that list, however, is seeing Rwanda and meeting mountain gorillas.
Getting to see these creatures requires some effort, the trek is uphill and can be miles. One of my travel companions had just had knee surgery and she was able to make it, I bet you can too.
I took this photo of a Rwandan Mountain Gorilla - so close!
The Luxury
After a day of trekking, we returned to our lodge and a world of transcendent luxury. The grounds resembled perfectly kept world-class botanical gardens and our rooms wonderfully appointed. Meals were delicious, fun affairs and I cannot say enough about the craftsman bartenders and baristas! Massage? Check. Hot tub? Check. Banging Wi-Fi? Check.
