My father is an avid fisherman. He has fished the Great Lakes for decades and has guide-level knowledge of trout fishing in Appalachia. So, when he invited me to go fishing, I knew I was in for something special. The itinerary required a commercial flight to Minnesota where we met up with other family members. Then we all boarded a small float plane and took off for Ontario. Touching down on a remote pristine lake the scenery was rugged and beautiful. Our cabin was perched on the shore. After carrying all our gear to the cabin, we waved goodbye to the pilot and watched him fly off, scheduled to return for us in one week.

After settling into the cabin, I went to the kitchen, and I could tell my aunt was upset. She said, “I forgot the food”! There were 10 of us and my aunt had prepared refrigerated and frozen food to supplement the fish we expected to catch. The refrigerated food was transported but we forgot all the frozen food.

Reader, we rallied. We ate bass every way it can be prepared, every day. There were wild blueberry bushes everywhere and we ate those with most meals. A man from across the lake brought us some homemade bread made by his wife. To change it up one day, we fished for lake trout. We were the heroes in our own story. Not only did we survive this inconvenience, but we also thrived and made a wonderful, wilderness family memory.
