How Turks and Caicos changed my life

The Luxury Experience

As a mechanical engineer for a major oil and gas company, one of my first roles was to manage projects at several fuel depots in the Caribbean. I couldn’t believe my luck! My territory included the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and The Cayman Islands. These projects taught me a lot about preparedness and resourcefulness. Every tool, every part and resource had to be planned and tracked from its source to the job site in time for construction. Try finding stainless steel bolts or conduit on Grand Turk Island!

On Providenciales, the flagship of Turks and Caicos Caribbean luxury, there were no budget accommodations. When I stayed on the island during my project’s construction, I was forced to stay in world class luxury resorts! Adventure by day, luxury by night. The experience opened my eyes to a world of white beaches and sparkling seas, and I couldn’t get enough.

The Adventure

My Turks and Caicos facilities included a fuel depot on Grand Turk. When I flew to this small island, I had my computer and a change of clothes in a backpack. I walked to the depot through fields of Caribbean cows, surrounded by expansive Atlantic blue.

After a hot, grimy day of petroleum work, I walked a couple of miles to my small hotel perched by the sea. Even though my company would have paid for a rental car, I relished this time experiencing Grand Turk on foot. I checked in, had a home cooked dinner and cold beer at the small bar. When I got to my room to rest, I watched the sunset while whales splashed around a hundred yards from my window.
