Belt and Suspenders
Motorcycles and Mt. Everest
Have I told you about my dream adventure? I want to ride a motorcycle from India to Mt. Everest base camp. There are many tour companies providing this service and nearly all of them use Royal Enfield Himalayans. Tuned to function at high elevations, these nimble bikes forge through riverbeds, rough roads and more to transport you to the highest mountains in the world. But that’s not what I want to talk about.
One of the ways I obsess about this trip to Mt. Everest is to pore through each publication of https://overlandjournal.com/. It’s my go to magazine for dreaming about overland motorized tours in remote parts of the world. Sometimes I go through the credits and reach out to photographers and writers of the epic articles.
This month I was fortunate to connect with world-class adventure photographer Toby Savage, @tobysphotographs. When I asked about his favorite gear, he said “I always carry a second phone and buy a local SIM card. As we say here in the UK, ‘belt and braces’!” Toby is a professional photographer whose attitude of saying ‘yes’ to an opportunity then worrying about how to do it later embraces the Cloudburst attitude of adventure on our own terms. Toby travels through the world on 4 wheels, 2 wheels and lately walked through part of the Sahara Desert with a small group of friends and six camels. Check out his work in the Fall 2025 Overland Journal.
